Collection: John William Waterhouse

Born in Rome during the Industrial Revolution, John William Waterhouse (April 6, 1849 — February 10, 1917) is an English painter famously known for depictions of mundane life set in Greek mythology, Arthurian legends, and other literary classics. His paintings reflected classical and mythical scenes, with a passion for magnificent women figures, such as Cleopatra and Ophelia. This Neoclassic and Romantic approach to painting would live on through artists in the 19th century. His works are currently housed in major British art museums and galleries and have been organized into a major retrospective by the Royal Academy.
